Rotary began
life in 1905 in a modest way in Chicago when a lawyer
named Paul Harris with three friends founded a new club.
The name of the Rotary Club took its name because meetings
were held at member’s homes in rotation. From the acorn
sprang a mighty oak.
Together the men (and also now women) of different
vocations and interests joined together to give them a
common sense of purpose by service to the community
locally or through International contacts, and to
encourage high ethical standards.
There are now 1.2 million members in 31,000 clubs in
160 countries striving constantly and effectively towards
these goals. Every year more than 60 million pounds is
given internationally to education and humanitarian
programmes.
The Rotary Club of Windsor and Eton was founded in 1931
. Fund raising for many local and international charitable
causes, coupled with community service, ranks highly in
the Club’s programme.
Examples of such causes over the past 75 years include
* The Mayor’s Christmas Fund;
* The formation of the King Edward VII league of
friends;
* An annual river trip and evening drives for old
people;
* Sponsorship of school prizes and organisation of the
annual Youth Speaks Competition in local schools;
* Provision in 1966 of a children’s playground for
Aberfan;
* The founding of and support of the Spencer Denny
workshop for the Disable and the Grove House, Old Windsor,
Residential Home for elderly people, both opened by the
Club’s Honorary Member, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh;
* The running of the Royal Windsor midsummer fair;
* Donation of a new minibus to People to places.
* In 1986 a cheque for £29,000 was presented to the
embryo of the Thames Valley Hospice.
The Club has raised some £ 104,000, mostly for local
charities.
These are just a few of many hundreds of donations made
to good causes during the past 75 years service which the
Club is now celebrating.
