Windsor take East Berkshire to the brink

Earlier, the first game of the day saw East Berkshire Under 14’s take on a Windsor CC Under 14 side in a Twenty-20 game. Wearing coloured polo shirts, imitating the pro version of the game, the game was played in the carnival style of the first class game with live music and colour commentary from Windsor CC’s own Wes Nichols.

East Berkshire batted first and were immediately under pressure as good Windsor bowling from Oli Jordan and Asif pegged them back early on. The wicket of Castledene though only brought Kumar to the crease to begin a vital innings. With the Windsor bowlers consistently dropping short, Kumar punished the bowling with sumptuous cuts and pulls of the back foot. Ably support by King and Zaman, Kumar maintained a good run rate and passed a deserved fifty before holing out in the pursuit of quick runs for 56. Good late bowling from Khan and Jordan prevented East Berkshire passing 100. A calamitous last ball run out saw the innings close at 96 off their 20 overs.

After a variety of interviews at the mid-innings break, including a chat with the East Berkshire star Kumar, Windsor began their pursuit of the total in a similar vain to the East Berkshire innings. Tight bowling from Yasin and Ishaq pegged Windsor back and saw early wickets fall. Only skipper Nair managed to right the ship before he too fell, this time to bowling of King. A brief fight back from Sam Jordan brought Windsor back into the game, but when he perished to Mehmood, the game looked up. But with the crowd building around the enclosed ground, the young East Berkshire team seemed to struggle with nerves whilst trying to close the game out and through extras, Windsor found themselves needing 11 runs off the last over. A superb last over from Gurveer saw East Berks home though to win by 9 runs.

After the match, the winners and runners-up were presented medals by Mike Gatting and Tony Monk (respective Lord’s Taverners and Windsor CC presidents) and East Berkshire star Kumar was presented with the winning trophy for the day. In addition, Windsor Cricket Club junior coaches James Jordan and Keith Saynor received a junior kit bag from Mike Gatting and the Lord’s Taverners.

Junior Update - Up to 13th June

Here is the latest news on the colts section of the club:

U9’s:
Have finally broken their run of losses with a win to North Maidenhead
U10’s:
Beat both Frensham & Valley End
U11’s:
Lost to Teddington but beat La Selles & Maidenhead & Bray, U11’s have 100% wins in Berkshire league and 50% wins in West Surrey
U12’s:
Lost to Ascot & Teddington!
U13's :
Two games played since last issue. Lost the match against District by one wicket.
Colin scored 64 not out against his district team mates and Sunny took 4-16 in a superb spell of bowling. Then played Wokingham U15 Girls and again lost by 3 wickets, let ourselves down by to many extras behind the stumps. Colin again top scored with 21 runs. Better batting from Andrew and Shray helped out. Zain and Sunny excelled in the bowling each getting 2 wickets for 9 Runs.
U17's:
Have won matches against Ascot (Hartridge 46) and Farncombe (James Brown 3 wickets). Both games on the Brighton tour were won, with good performances from Tom Hartridge (5 wickets) and Steve Saunders (65).

Junior Update - June 2nd 2006
Her e is a brief update to the Junior sides from the colt section of the club:

U13’s so far have just faced Rain Rain Rain, with three matches in a row cancelled.
A positive is that the squad is now over twenty players strong and attendance at Tuesday trainings has been great. Mention must go to Ollie Jordan (County) and Colin Thomson (District) whom have both made the respective sides this year.

U12’s have played 3 matches, 1 win, 1 loss, 1 rained off and are going from strength to strength with new players coming into the team under the guidance of Captain Rhys Bryant.

U11’s have played 5 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 rained off. Jamie Tuthill’s captaincy and wicket keeping is going from strength to strength whilst Arjan Ghattuaura still guarantees to provide a reasonable run-rate off limited overs and Sam Billingsley-Dadd always guarantees a wicket or two.

U10’s are struggling having lost both matches so far, nevertheless this is good experience for the U9’s who make up the U10 team with a special mention going to Jack Leach a competent U9 player who gave Sunbury a challenge both with his batting and bowling.

U9’s are also struggling having lost their first 3 matches although only by 3 runs on one game.

The Half-term Cricket Club has been a great success again with the usual format of intense coaching in the morning followed by a practice match in the afternoon and kids been dragged home by parents at the end. The coaching has been led by ECB Level 3 coach Tony Burrows, Sean Tehan (ACB Level 2 coach) and Arthur Cuthbertson (Berkshire Development Manager) with support from two older colts, Chris Kellard & Sam Jordan. Also this has bought the club 2 replacement spring return stumps, a crazy catch net and a plethora of balls for the bowling machine.

Additionally last week, Flicx donated various training kit to the club as part of the Cricket Foundation Raffle last year. This kit is in the back room for all to use, please don’t leave it out as it will walk. We’d like to thank all the colts who turned up on Saturday morning and to Flicx for giving bags.
